About Us

The Italian American Civil Rights League was established to preserve, protect, and promote the proud heritage and contributions of Italian Americans.

Our ancestors came to the United States seeking opportunity and freedom, the promise of the American Dream. Through hard work, resilience, and devotion to family, Italian Americans have made lasting contributions to every facet of society: culture, the arts, science, government, sports, and beyond. From the voices of Sinatra and Pavarotti, to the leadership of Justice Antonin Scalia and Governor Ella Grasso, to the perseverance of champions like Vince Lombardi and Joe DiMaggio, the Italian-American spirit has profoundly shaped our nation’s identity.

Despite these achievements, Italian Americans have often faced discrimination, stereotyping, and attempts to diminish their role in American history. The IACRL exists to confront such prejudice, defend our community’s integrity, and ensure that the truth of our shared heritage is honored and accurately represented.

We proudly celebrate our traditions and figures of historical significance, including Christopher Columbus, whose courage and exploration marked the beginning of a new world — and we firmly oppose efforts to erase or defame their legacies. Through advocacy, education, and celebration, the Italian American Civil Rights League continues its commitment to safeguarding the legacy of past generations while inspiring future ones.

Our Mission

The IACRL’s mission is to:

  • Honor Italian traditions and uphold the values of family, faith, and hard work.

  • Educate the public about the contributions and struggles of Italian Americans throughout history.

  • Advocate for equal treatment, respect, and representation of Italian Americans in all spheres of society.

  • Preserve and promote Italian-American culture through education, media, and community engagement.

Membership dues and contributions directly support initiatives that defend Italian-American civil rights, raise awareness through the media, and fund programs that advance understanding, pride, and unity within our community.

Our Founder

“Italian Americans have been loyal to this country generation after generation. We have been Americans first. We built this country, fought for it, and earned our place with pride. We fought its wars, built its cities, and paid its taxes, yet we have been treated like suspects, caricatures, second-class citizens in the very nation our fathers helped raise from the dust.

I did not start this League to make headlines. I started it because I saw too many families slandered, too many children taught that their name should carry shame. We have never asked for special treatment. We demand equal treatment. This is about dignity. They wanted us quiet. They wanted us afraid.  But no more. Unity among us is what is required. If we do not stand up for ourselves, no one else will.”

- Joseph Colombo, IACRL Founder

Joseph Colombo was more than just a name; he was a proud Italian-American who used his voice and platform to fight against discrimination and prejudice targeting his community. In 1970, he established the Italian-American Civil Rights League (IACRL), sparking a powerful movement to challenge negative stereotypes and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Italian-Americans nationwide.

Through his efforts, Italian-Americans gained strength in their identity and solidarity in their mission. His legacy continues to motivate future generations to preserve their culture and stand tall against injustice.

1970s

The IACRL became a national powerhouse as a watchdog against Anti-Italian discrimination. They successfully worked with the producers of The Godfather, executives of major commercial brands, and others to show Italian Americans in a positive light. They successfully lobbied the Federal Government to stop formally using the term "mafia" on official records. They opened IACRL chapter offices across New York City, did charitable work across the nation, and held two massive 'Unity Day' rallies in Manhattan attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

Today

The organization operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and has local chapters across America. The IACRL holds annual national gatherings, has expanded its digital presence across social media, and continues its work in civil rights, cultural education, and historical preservation. We focus on Italian-American representation in the media, preserving public monuments and symbols of our heritage, charity work, and historical education. The League also reaffirms its support for traditional family values and civic engagement.
